1.1 Requirements for the use of electrodes in submerged thermal electric furnaces

The process technology of producing deoxidizers and alloying agents required by the iron and steel industry with electric energy as the main heat source is the submerged arc furnace production of ferroalloys. The high temperature and thermal energy required for the production of ferroalloys are usually converted by feeding electrical energy into the furnace through self-baking electrodes. Self-baking electrodes are the basic conditions and preconditions for the production technology of submerged arc furnace smelting ferroalloys.

Considering that high temperature production needs to be carried out continuously, submerged arc furnaces usually operate uninterruptedly for several years. For this reason, self-baking electrodes of electric furnaces are required to be able to continuously transmit electricity. The quality, performance, baking technology and conditions of the electrode paste should meet the requirements of production.

1.2 Preparation process of self-baking electrode (electrode paste)

The self-baking electrode is made of anthracite, pitch and residue as raw materials, which are mixed and evenly mixed in a certain proportion. After stirring and kneading at an appropriate temperature, it is pressed into shape and cooled to make a paste. When using, put the small pieces of electrode paste into the electrode shell of the submerged arc furnace, and rely on the Joule heat generated when the current passes through and the conduction heat in the furnace to sinter and coking by itself. The electrodes can be used for continuous forming and sintering while being used, and different diameters can be configured according to the capacity of the electric furnace. Self-baking electrodes are widely used in ferroalloy production due to their simple process and low cost.

1.3 Raw materials for preparing electrode paste

The Raw material for making electrode paste is composed of solid carbon material and bonding material. The quality of electrode paste is related to the formulation of Raw materials and the preparation process. Solid materials include calcined anthracite, metallurgical coke, petroleum coke and graphite electrode scraps. Anthracite is dense and has high carbon content, which can improve the thermal stability, electrical conductivity and mechanical strength of the electrode; the binders of the electrode paste include pitch and tar, and tar is added to adjust the softening point. During the electrode paste sintering process, the binder is decomposed and converted into coke after removing volatile matter, which makes the electrode form a hard whole. The formula of the electrode paste should consider the ratio of various solid materials, the particle size composition, the softening point and the addition amount of the binder.

1.4 Classification and performance of electrode paste

electrode paste is divided into standard paste and airtight paste due to different uses. The former is mostly used in semi-closed submerged arc furnaces; the latter is often used in closed electric furnaces and large-capacity semi-closed electric furnaces because of its low roasting temperature and easy sintering. The solid material of the standard paste is mostly anthracite and metallurgical coke, while the solid material of the closed paste should be mixed with graphite chips and petroleum coke in large quantities. The binder in the standard paste is mostly medium temperature asphalt, and the binder in the closed paste uses a large amount of tar and graphite fragments. The special sealed electrode paste favored by ferronickel manufacturers in submerged arc furnace smelting has significantly increased the amount of tar and graphite crushed. The high price of graphite chips and tar is the main reason for the high price of airtight paste, especially special paste.

From 1954 to 1976, calcined petroleum was widely used in aluminum plants. On the one hand, the carbon plant of aluminum factory produces anode paste, using local materials; On the other hand, there were no more effective pastes.

An important index to measure the performance of calcined pet coke is the content of volatiles in calcined pet coke. If the content of volatiles in calcined pet coke is too high, the shrinkage ratio of raw anode will be large in the roasting process, and
