The submerged arc furnace is used for the reduction smelting of metal oxidized ore, so it is also called the ore heat reduction furnace.

Submerged arc furnace for the production of ferroalloy called ferroalloy furnace: for the production of calcium carbide called calcium carbide furnace: for the production of yellow phosphorus known as yellow phosphorus furnace: for the production of matte known as matte furnace: for ferroalloy refining known as mineral heat refining furnace: for the pre-reduction charge for melting, metal and slag separation, known as melting furnace.

For the furnace with refractory material masonry is furnace lining masonry.  Because the molten pool of mineral hot furnace not only bears strong high temperature action, but also suffers from the erosion and mechanical scour of charge, high temperature furnace gas, molten iron and high temperature slag, it is necessary to select specific refractory materials.

Requirements for refractory materials: high refractoriness, high temperature shape, volume can have a large change, high temperature strength, slag resistance, high temperature chemical stability, refractory materials should be kept clean appearance, structure integrity, no defects, no cracks on the surface

In the masonry of mine furnace, refractory bricks are mainly used as refractory materials and refractory castable as supplementary materials.  The material selection is as follows:

1, carbon brick

Carbon brick is a kind of carbon material.  It is made from crushed coke and anthracite.  Its specifications are: section 400mm×400mm(allowable error is ±30mm), length is 800~1600mm(allowable error is ±5mm);

The advantages of carbon bricks are high refractoriness, strong thermal shock resistance and large compressive strength.  Good stability, volume stability, good slag resistance.  However, it is easy to oxidize at high temperature, and the oxidation rate will accelerate with the increase of temperature.

Therefore, carbon materials can not be in contact with air, water vapor and other gases at high temperature. Carbon material has high thermal conductivity and poor thermal insulation performance.  In the ore furnace, all smelting is not afraid of carburizing varieties, can use carbon brick as lining material, ore furnace with self-baking carbon brick

2. Magnesia brick for submerged arc furnace

The main ingredient of magnesia brick is magnesia, and its refractoriness is above 2273K and alkaline resistance is very strong.  But the softening point of load is low and thermal shock resistance is poor.  Refining furnaces are mostly smelted in alkaline environment, and alkaline refractories resistant to alkaline erosion should be selected, such as magnesium brick as lining.

3. Clay bricks

Clay brick is a kind of weak acid refractory material, which can resist acid slag erosion and cannot be used at high temperature.

To sum up, the selection of refractory materials for submerged arc furnace should be based on the actual smelting environment and smelting Raw materials to carry out professional configuration.  High alumina brick can also be used instead of clay brick in the melting pool of submerged arc furnace.  The amorphous refractories mainly consist of cold ramming paste and high aluminum castable.
